AI Office of the President

The use of generative AI tools by UAB employees and students is governed by existing UAB policies and procedures. Refer to the principles regarding generative AI communicated by UAB leadership in August 2023 and practical recommendations offered to support responsible instruction, research, and University activities.

In general, any use of AI should comply with the UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct. More specific policies to consider appear below.

Acquisition and/or purchase of AI technology tools
  • Acquisition of new AI technology requires approval, even for free tools.
  • Do not use your UAB account to use generative AI for personal use.
  • Do not download generative AI tools onto your UAB device if the AI tool is not approved.
Use of UAB data Do not upload Sensitive or Restricted/PHI data into generative AI systems.
Academic integrity Students should not use generative AI in academic work unless it is clearly stated that AI use is approved in the course syllabus and may only then be used within the limits stated in the course syllabus. Use of AI must be disclosed. Academic Integrity Code
Authorship Creative content originating from non-human origin (e.g., artificial intelligence) should be clearly attributed to the originating analytics program used. Authorship Policy
Research
  • Use of generative AI in the NIH peer review process is prohibited.
  • Use of AI in the development of a grant proposal should be consistent with funding agency policy statement and otherwise validated, appropriately cited, and disclosed.
  • If falsification, fabrication, plagiarism, or other misconduct is suspected, follow the procedures for reporting.
