Programs with a February 1 application deadline:
Immersive Cultural Explorations in Japan (JPA 190/JPA 290/JPA 390/JPA 490)
Spanning several diverse and vibrant locations in Japan, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Saitama, and Kanagawa, this program offers a comprehensive and immersive journey into the country’s rich cultural heritage and forward-thinking innovations.
Highlights: Explore famous historical landmarks and modern shopping districts; interact with local university students; travel to Kyoto and discover its iconic temples and shrines
Film, art and literature in Spain & Spanish for Health Professionals (SPA 290 A&B/SPA 390)
Students take Spanish courses in the morning and enjoy cultural activities in the afternoon while studying and living in both Madrid and Seville, offering a deep and meaningful integration into Spanish culture.
Highlights: Study Spanish language, literature, and medical Spanish; cultural immersion; visit the country’s capital and cultural epicenter
This program encourages students to explore how voice, power, and social change translate across cultures through immersive learning experiences in South Africa.
Highlights: Tours of Cape Town; site visit to the homes of President Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu; service-learning programs in Johannesburg and Cape Town
Costa Rica - Rainforest Ecology (BY 269/569)
Students travel across Costa Rica to observe the fauna and flora of the lowland rainforest, one of the world's most bio-diverse ecosystems.
Highlights: Boat rides through the jungle in Tortuguero; rainforest hikes; visits to Arenal Volcano and Ecothermales Natural Hot Springs

China - Language and Culture at Shanghai International Studies University (UAB faculty-coordinated program)
Students learn about the local culture and language in Shanghai, China’s largest city. Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) offers Chinese language courses at all levels, with placement determined by a language assessment.
Highlights: Optional weekend excursions, including city tours, museums, and acrobatics
Canada - French Language Immersion at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UAB faculty-coordinated program)
This immersive experience focuses on French language and culture in Chicoutimi, a fully French‑speaking city in Québec’s Saguenay region.
Highlights: Full French immersion
