Faculty Excellence Patrick Johnson July 31, 2024

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Social Work would like to congratulate Mary Jacque Carroll and Laurel Iverson Hitchcock, Ph.D., on their successful promotions! During the fall semester of 2024, Carroll will be promoted to associate professor, while Hitchcock will assume the title of professor. Their valuable contributions to our department, the College of Arts and Sciences, the UAB Community, and the broader social work profession are commendable.

In addition, Donny Gerke, Ph.D., assistant professor, and Colleen Fisher, Ph.D., associate professor, have each secured three-year terms with the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE), a testament to their commitment to their research areas. Gerke will serve on the Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression, while Fisher joins the Commission on Global Social Work Education. Their appointments reflect their significant contributions to their fields.

Lastly, Gerke was also selected to participate in the Fore AHEAD Center’s Pilot and Feasibility Scholars Program, which has a specific focus on HIV prevention and management in the Deep South.
