UAB’s Department of Social Work taught me how to deliver evidence-based social work practice with a diverse population, educated me on how to advocate for vulnerable groups, and instilled in me the social work ethics and values to apply to everyday practice.

A social work minor can help you work more effectively with social work professionals and can give you an introductory understanding of at-risk populations and how to work with them.

You might choose this minor because you have a related major (sociology, psychology, political science, etc.) and you want a career that involves helping people. But even if you're in a different field (business, chemistry, Spanish, etc.), learning more about social justice, social welfare, and populations can help expand your understanding of the world and how to interact in it.

Requirements

The social work minor requires 18 hours of coursework. A complete list of minor requirements and courses is available in the UAB Undergraduate Catalog. Students pursuing a social work minor may not enroll in senior-level practice courses or in any courses involving a field placement.

All social work minors must take SW 100: Introduction to Social Work. The overall goal of this course is to introduce you to the value-based profession of social work. You will have the opportunity to learn about social work's history, mission, professional values, theoretical frame, and the systems/ecological perspective. Further, you will explore arenas in generalist practice and the varied roles and responsibilities of social work professionals in a range of fields or practices.

You will also be required to take 15 hours in electives from social work courses. Students must earn a C or better in all courses applied to the minor.
