Roadmap for America’s Cancer Explorers for the 21st Century (RACE21):
The Roadmap for America’s Cancer Explorers for the 21st Century (RACE21) program builds a pipeline for UAB undergraduate students interested in Cancer Research. It is part of a larger of a larger initiative between the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) and UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (OCCC) to increase underrepresented groups in cancer research. The scholarships will support research activities in mentored laboratories by selected students in the program. We are therefore issuing this call for applications.
About the Program:
RACE21 students actively participating in cancer-related research will complete a paid summer internship in their freshman and sophomore years. Students in their junior and senior year will receive fellowships as cancer researchers and be enrolled in undergraduate research hours during the Fall and Spring Semesters. The research phase consists of students spending a 9-week internship during the summer (40 hours per week) carrying out a cancer-related research project in the laboratory of one of UAB's funded biomedical researchers. The research will be designed in part by the student, who is then expected to develop a presentation for a national meeting and eventually be author on a biomedical research journal paper. This component also provides the student with the opportunity to meet and network with other undergraduate students from colleges across the United States and the world.

Requirements:
- United States citizen or permanent resident
- Must have a valid social security number
- Must be considering a career in a cancer biology related field
- Open to high school senior planning on entering UAB as freshman the following school year
- Must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA
- Must be a full-time student (UAB students)
- High School applicants must be planning to attend UAB in the Fall of 2022
- Commit to completing two summer research internships (during freshman and sophomore years)
- Preference given to students underrepresented in Biomedical careers
