Background:

Dr. Carter is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Nutrition Sciences working under the mentorship of Drs. Laura Rogers and Lyse Norian. His research pursuits are at the intersection of cardiovascular function and cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer survivors. As an exercise physiologist, Dr. Carter is especially interested in the influence of exercise training on cardioprotection and anti-tumor immunity among breast cancer survivors.

In the fall of 2015, Dr. Carter was awarded an intramural grant (PI: Carter, $25,000, UAB IRB # F160215001) from the UAB Palliative Research Enhancement Project (PREP) to conduct a pilot/feasibility study focused on enhancing cardiovascular/metabolic health among breast cancer survivors with limited mobility. To date, this will be the first investigation, in any cancer population, to combine simulated-altitude with exercise training for the purpose of enhancing functional reserve thought to support greater engagement in free-living physical activity.
