If you use Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) on a Mac, iPad, or iPhone, you need to update them before July 13, 2026, to use full functionality. This update is required due to a Microsoft licensing change.
This is not a security issue, but not updating will significantly limit what you can do with the apps.
What happens if you don’t update
After July 13, older versions of Microsoft 365 apps on Apple devices will switch to read-only mode. You will still be able to open, view or print files, but you will not be able to edit documents, save changes or create new files.
Note: Windows and Android devices are not affected.
What you need to do
1. Make sure your device is supported
- Mac: macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
- iPhone/iPad: iOS 17 or later
2. Update your Microsoft 365 apps
- Mac apps must be version 16.83 or newer
- iOS apps must be version 2.93 or newer
