Every role in UAB can be defined: Researcher, executive, assistant; the list goes on and on. How can someone be expected to keep up with the well-defined roles? HR Information Systems and UAB IT worked together to find a way to track certain roles.

As people transfer to new departments or leave the University, a new application helps HR keep up with the cchanges. The program allows easy assignment and reviewing of designated roles as well as provides an audit trail.

“The system includes a robust self-updating security protocol that is implemented on the fly for all transactions to protect the security of existing data in UAB HR applications,” said Ramya Tummala, director of application and consulting services. “It also tracks changes from human interaction and from automated processes that can revoke roles when a user transfers from the department that granted, keeping the system continually secured.”

Rahul Thadani, executive director of Human Resources Systems Operations, said the HR Roles update is easy to use.

The system is updated nightly using identity management data through an intermediary system called Grouper and, likewise, provides role updates into that system for synthesis.
