Be on the lookout for a new phishing scam, attempting to get users to use a “free” online document converter tool, potentially resulting in malware and other viruses that could affect your device.

“UAB’s approved tool is Adobe Acrobat, which allows you to convert documents and send eSignatures for free,” said Jerry Smith, associate director for information security operations. “Any unsolicited tool is likely going to be a scam.”

Access Adobe Acrobat through the IT Service Portal.

The FBI has reported that cyber criminals are promoting free document converter or downloader tools that might claim to combine files or convert videos into MP3s. While the tool advertised may create a file, it usually contains malware. When opened, these bad actors will have full access to your device and may try to find personal identifiable information within the assets uploaded to the site.

“Think before you click,” Smith said. “When you receive an email about a service or software from an unknown sender, always double check the content of the email. Users of tools should only access them through approved UAB channels, such as the IT Service Portal.”
