Easy passwords are easily cracked, leading to a possible account compromise in under 30 seconds. The longer and more complex your password is, the harder it becomes for bad actors to gain access to your information.

Passwords remain the first line of defense for your data, so why compromise security over simplicity?

At UAB, the password to your BlazerID is required to be minimum 15 characters long and must follow the guidelines our security experts have outlined. This includes:

  • Password Complexity, meaning it needs to have certain characters or values within the phrase
  • Password Strength, our system will compare your password to what is considered “bad” or “common” passwords
  • Password History, does it match any of your previous passwords?

Still curious on how to make your passcode stronger? Here are some tips:

  • Avoid using personal information, like pet names or alma maters.
  • Create unique passwords for different accounts. Your BlazerID passcode should not be the same one for your bank.
  • Use two-factor authorization. Here at UAB, we use Duo for two-factor authorization, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it to secure other accounts. Try adding it to your social media or other personal accounts.

What happens if you need to change your password at UAB?

Passwords can be updated on a self-serve basis through BlazerID Central. But if you need help to reset your password, the next step is to meet with an AskIT technician. To better secure your account, these meetings will be scheduled either in person at a help desk on campus or online through Zoom. When you get to your meeting, make sure to have a valid ID or OneCard. If you are on Zoom, make sure the camera is on.
