UAB researchers will have a more streamlined process to request REDCap instances to support clinical research endeavors across the institution. REDCap is a secure, web-based application designed for building and managing online surveys, case report forms and databases for research studies.
UAB IT is transitioning REDCap to new supported infrastructure, ensuring improved reliability and performance for the research community. UAB IT and Health System Information Services are actively partnering to ensure full research compliance and security requirements are met for the institution.
As part of the effort to streamline the service and consolidate REDCap instances, UAB IT and the Heersink School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine will be introducing a central location to request an instance. The Department of Medicine instance will be the first to be migrated. An important principle of this project is to minimize disruption to existing studies.
The Department of Medicine generously waived project start-up costs for its instance in December 2025. The unified UAB REDCap instance is supported by the University through the Research Strategic Initiative. While there will be no start-up costs, other services such as clinical study design, statistical analysis, and additional research support continue to be offered as fee-for-service through the Department of Medicine, ensuring that researchers have access to expert-level analytics support when needed. In the coming months UAB IT and HSIS will work to migrate other instances of REDCap, as well as create a faculty task force to guide full-service program development.
