UAB is launching two new OpenAI services, Codex and the API platform, that help users build software, automate work and develop custom AI solutions.
Part of UAB’s Artificial Intelligence Strategic Initiative (AISI), these new tools join the suite of AI tools designed to help enhance and automate work at UAB. Before requesting a paid tool, confirm it’s needed for your role and get supervisor approval.
Codex and the API platform will be available to university faculty and staff for a monthly fee. It is not available for users affiliated with UAB Hospital, UAB Medicine, UAB Medicine Ambulatory, and clinical affiliates.
Codex
While experience with coding will help you use Codex, it is also designed to help those with little to no coding experience to build, review and update code.
What Codex can do
- Write or update code and content
- Identify issues and suggest fixes
- Integrate with repositories such as GitHub and Azure
Availability and cost
- Cost: $108 per month (includes 500 credits per week). Credit usage will be re-evaluated after six months, so cost may change.
- Eligibility: University faculty and staff working with Public, Sensitive and some Restricted data, not including PHI or regulated data, such as PCI, ITAR, CUI and HIPAA data.
Those who want to use a grant account for billing should contact their department for an Oracle account number to be used.
How to request access
University faculty and staff will be able to request access through the IT Service Portal.
API platform
While coding experience can be helpful, the OpenAI API Platform can be used by both developers and non-developers to build custom applications, automate workflows, and integrate AI into existing systems.
What the API Platform can do
- Create custom AI-powered applications and tools
- Automate tasks and business processes using AI models
- Integrate AI capabilities into websites, software, and research projects
Availability and cost
- Cost: Varies based on usage and is billed according to actual API consumption.
Using AI tools responsibly
As with other AI tools, Codex and the API platform are intended to support, not replace, human judgment. Users should review inputs and outputs, follow university policies, and ensure compliance when working with Sensitive or Restricted data.

Additional AI tool updates
Gemini: UAB is in discussions with Google about implementing Gemini, Google’s AI assistant for writing, planning, brainstorming, research support and connected Google app workflows.
Anthropic Claude: UAB does not currently have a contract with Anthropic Public Benefit Corporation and is pausing efforts to pursue one while assessing a U.S. Department of Defense/War directive related to ICT supply chain risks. UAB continues to monitor the guidance and explore compliant options.
