Mona Fouad, M.D., MPH | Chief Executive Officer

Mona Fouad, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Division of Preventive Medicine, Edward E. Partridge, M.D., Endowed Chair for Cancer Disparity Research, and Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion in the Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Fouad is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and is recognized nationally as a leader in health disparities research. She served as a member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities from 2008-2012. Also. Dr. Fouad was selected as the UAB 2018 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer for advancing the frontiers of science and outstanding contributions to education, research and public service. Dr. Fouad obtained her MD from Alexandria University School of Medicine in Alexandria, Egypt, and her MPH from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.

Dr. Fouad has contributed to the science of health disparities through major studies to identify variability in cancer care and outcomes based on race, gender, age, and social determinants of health. She has developed nationally emulated models in recruitment and retention of minorities in clinical trials and innovative community-based approaches to reducing racial disparities in breast and cervical cancer, and chronic diseases prevention and control. Further, Dr. Fouad understands the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare and health research. To that end, she has led several research education, mentoring, and training efforts aimed at increasing diversity, promoting a diverse workforce, and health equity.

Teresa Shufflebarger, MSHA, MBA, FACHE | Chief Admin Officer

Teresa Shufflebarger, MSHA, MBA, FACHE is a career healthcare executive who has worked in multihospital systems with focused efforts in business and service line development and strategy creation and deployment. She began her career with The Baptist Health System where she worked for over 25 years in various roles of increasing responsibility including inpatient and outpatient operations, business development, physician recruitment, and strategic planning. She served as Chief Strategy Officer for the joint ventured Brookwood Baptist Health and was responsible for strategy, business development, and growth for the five hospitals. In 2019, she founded a strategy and management consulting firm, Allegro Partners, LLC, dedicated to promoting meaningful, interactive, and collaborative partnerships between executive leadership, governing board members, and key constituents. Allegro Partners guided organizations in their efforts to accomplish their vision, mission, goals, and objectives.

In January of 2021, Teresa accepted the role of Chief Administrative Officer of Live HealthSmart Alabama. LHSA is a comprehensive initiative seed funded by UAB to partner with businesses, schools, faith-based organizations, non-profits and state and local government to make changes in policies, systems, and environment to positively impact the health of Alabamians by promoting good nutrition, physical activity, and health & wellness. She is focused on growth, expansion, and sustainability of this impactful initiative.
