Membership in new horizons at UAB

  • Spend a morning attending stimulating talks, expanding your knowledge and meeting interesting people - all for less than $4 a day, and in addition, you get snacks and parking included.

What is new horizons?

  • New Horizons is a group of over a hundred retired and semi-retired professionals, business people and academics who enrich their lives by expanding their knowledge, participating in cultural events and enjoying new experiences.
  • New Horizons meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m until noon. Each morning session is highlighted by a speaker chosen to address a topic on a wide variety of subjects including literature, history, medicine, science, local cultural events,  and global politics. Beverages and a  variety of snacks are provided and parking is also included.
  • On Fridays, a discussion group meets to discuss current events and any other topic of interest.
  • Most importantly, New Horizons offers a variety of social opportunities for you to meet interesting people and make new friends. Members are invited to participate in parties and lunches, cultural events, nature visits, and bus trips where they meet and socialize with people who share their curiosity and interests.

So, what is the deal?

  • You can sign up by the term ( 24 classes) or by the year (three terms totaling 72 classes). Your membership fee covers all the classes, Friday discussions, beverages, snacks, and parking. Additional New Horizons activities, such as luncheons, trips, and cultural events are extra.
  • A single term costs $92.00 a person, which averages $3.13  each class; if you sign up by the year, there is a cost saving.

What if you don't want to attend three mornings a week?

  •  Back in the day, we had to go to class because attendance was important and college was expensive. Those days are over because New Horizons does not offer courses; each talk stands alone so you can attend the talks as often as you wish.
  • If you miss 1/2  of the talks, the cost per session is less than the cost of a movie ticket.
