Dear Colleagues,

After a rigorous search committee process, it is with great pleasure that the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine announces the appointment of John Huidekoper, M.D., as the co-medical director of the anesthesia labs.

Dr. Huidekoper received his degree in Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University, attended medical school at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, performed his residency at Ochsner Health, and then completed a Critical Care Medicine fellowship at UAB. Recently, he has been leading our community critical care services at Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham.

The anesthesia labs provide diagnostic laboratory as well as clinical support for our surgical ICUs and perioperative areas here at UAB Hospital. Along with clinical oversight of anesthesia clinical equipment, technology, and supplies, the anesthesia lab director acts as the direct faculty liaison to our hospital labs and blood bank.

Dr. Huidekoper is excited to accept and lead our efforts of continued excellence in clinical and laboratory support. We look forward to his partnership with Bert Pierce, M.D., to serve the MSA faculty, our department, and perioperative services. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Huidekoper in his new role.

Sincerely,
Dan E. Berkowitz, M.D.
