DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY AS A RESIDENT
It varies depending on the rotation. We rotate through many areas of the hospital, and the hours are specific to each rotation. However, a usual day in the general OR begins by setting up your room before the 6 a.m. morning conference. At 6:30 a.m. you’ll go talk to your patient and roll back to the OR by 7:00 a.m. You’ll continue your caseload (with morning and lunch breaks) until 3 p.m., when you’ll either change assignments or stay in your room if you’re on-call or moonlighting. If not, then you’re free to leave.

Why did you choose anesthesiology as a your speciality?
I initially had a difficult time choosing a specialty because I enjoyed so many rotations in medical school. Anesthesia was one of my last rotations, and I discovered that the field had a unique assortment of many different experiences and skills that I felt would make me a well-rounded physician.

Alumni,
It is with great excitement and honor that I introduce myself as the new Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UAB. I am grateful to be part of a rich tradition of esteemed chairs who have built this Department to its current state of excellence. The Department is humming. The clinical operation has grown dramatically, providing service to multiple anesthetizing locations. The incorporation of ERAS protocols, and a dashboard that measures quality metrics in real time, ensures the highest-quality patient care and efficiency. We direct and provide care in most of the ICUs in the institution and are dedicated to preoperative evaluation, habilitation, and optimization in our PACT. Both the translational and clinical research enterprise receives more than $5 million in funding from the NIH, making it a top 10 department in the country. Our resident and fellow education is legendary and progressive, ensuring that we train outstanding consultants who become leaders in our field.
