Fellowship Experience

Thank you for your interest in our Advanced Cardiology Imaging Fellowship Prgram. This one-to-two year program is designed for candidates who have completed or are in an ACGME-accredited General Cardiololgy fellowship. Our program provides superior advanced cardiovascular image training in a collaborative environment. We have specialty clinics across our medical campus, which is anchored by our 1,200 bed inpatient center UAB Hospital—the eighth largest public hospital in the nation. The hospital is in close proximity to the Birmingham VA Medical Center, UAB Hospital Highlands campus, The Kirklin Clinic, and Children's Hospital of Alabama where fellows also train.

 

 

Clinical Training

Our program provides training in diverse cardiovascular imaging modalities. Here, you will gain practical proficiency in Advanced Echocardiography, emphasizing interventional echo for pre-procedure planning, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative follow-up in coordination with our Structural Interventional program.

Additionally, you will receive training in Cardiac MRI, Cardiac CT, SPECT, and PET, which will enable you to interpret a wide range of imaging studies under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Finally, you will contribute to the development and implementation of patient care plans based on imaging findings, enhancing your clinical decision-making skills.

Our leaders are passionate about providing personalized training tailored to each trainees interests and career goals. We aim to ensure the attainment of COCATS level III training standards, empowering fellows to excel in their chosen areas of specialization within the field of cardiovascular imaging.

 

 

Research Opportunities

You will contribute to scientific advancements by engaging in a variety of collaborative cardiovascular research projects. We encourage our fellows to present findings at conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

 

 

Teaching Conferences

Fellows will participate in educating medical students, residents, and healthcare professionals, lead sessions and case conferences to enhance understanding of cardiovascular imaging and contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the quality assurance team to ensure optimal patient care standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What will I need to apply?

    Candidates who have completed or are in an ACGME-accredited General Cardiology fellowship are encouraged to apply. All applications are reviewed by our UAB Cardiology Review Team. All submissions require the following documents:

    1. Current CV (updated within 3 months)

    2. Coverletter outlining career goals and interest in cardiovascular imaging

    3. Two Letters of Recommendation 

  • What are the salaries & benefits for fellows?

    Our program provides benefits and insurance plans available to all fellows at UAB. You can find the list of salaries and benefits for fellows based on PGY level here.

  • Is there a minimum USMLE score required?

    There is no minimum USMLE score requirement. We take the score into account as part of the overall review of an application.

  • What are the key program dates for Applications

    Applications Open and Close — June through May: Apply through ERAS

    Applications Reviewed — July, must be available by August 1

    Interview Invitations Released — last week in August

    Interviews Begin — September and continue through October

    Match Day — November

    Fellowship begins — July 1

  • Do you sponsor H1B or J1 Visas?

    Yes, the division can sponsor these Visas.
