Emerge Cohort
The Developmental Core launched the Emerge peer-mentoring program in 2023 to support Early-Stage and New HIV Investigators (ESI/NHI) - including both MDs and PhDs - across UAB. Participants are drawn competitively from the Schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Medicine. Each annual cohort includes approximately 12 members who participate in monthly, in-person sessions facilitated by Drs. Ronnie “Matt” Gravett and Angela Wahl.
The program is designed to strengthen professional networks, build skills through “Research in Progress” presentations, and provide targeted guidance on topics critical to securing independent NIH funding. Each participant delivers at least one research-in-progress update during the year-long series. The curriculum spans nine months, with a planned summer break, and is refined annually based on participant feedback to ensure optimal support for early-stage investigators in HIV research.
Meetings for the 2026 Emerge Cohort will be held every third Tuesday, beginning March 17, 2026.
