Mona Fouad

Welcome to the Division of Preventive Medicine (DOPM) in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Through collaborative research, training, community engagement, and dissemination of knowledge, we work to reduce disease burden, increase opportunities for healthier living, promote health equity, and enhance the quality of life for everyone.

Research

As a research division, our primary scientific focus areas include cancer prevention and control, diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular disease, drug use and misuse, and the cross-cutting themes of health disparities and health equity. DOPM faculty-led several large research studies and projects highlighted in the Research section of this website. To support this robust research program, we maintain a comprehensive research infrastructure that provides a research clinic that includes a lab, imaging equipment, and exercise testing. Also, a biostatistics and bioinformatics unit and recruitment/retention shared resources that service the School of Medicine and departments and programs across the university.

DOPM is also home to the UAB Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center (MHERC). This university-wide interdisciplinary research center has maintained continuous funding from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities since 2005. As a community of scientists, the MHERC boasts robust research, training/education, and community engagement programs that support health disparities/health equity research across the university and worldwide, including the inaugural UAB Grand Challenge Project – Live HealthSmart Alabama. If you are a UAB faculty member interested in health disparities or health equity, we encourage you to click here and join us by becoming a member of the MHERC.

Education, Mentoring, and Training

The DOPM faculty are committed to education and mentoring opportunities for scientists at all career stages to build the pipeline of new researchers and enhance the careers of established researchers. In addition, the MHERC’s long-standing education and training programs give new and experienced researchers the tools they need to engage in health disparities and health equity research. Community Engagement- Collaborative Capacity Building

One of the greatest strengths of the Division is our community-engaged research. Researchers in DOPM and the MHERC have long-standing, fully collaborative community partnerships that endure outside any particular study or project. These partnerships are a lasting investment in the community because they empower people to take charge of their own health. This creates a sustainable research capacity – community members are not just studying subjects, they’re research partners.

The Future

Naturally, we are enormously proud of all that the DOPM has achieved. However, we are always looking for ways to grow and stand ready to respond to new challenges. As you click through our site, we hope you will consider the value and importance of preventive medicine and find ways to integrate our innovations into your own work. We would very much look forward to working with you!
