Preparing physicians for careers in academic medicine and clinical practice

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at UAB offers postdoctoral fellowship training for two or more years. Our fellowship is designed to train physicians, who have completed a residency in Internal Medicine, in the subspecialty of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, and meet the requirements for subspecialty certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Eligibility for ABIM subspecialty board examination can usually be met in two years. During these two years, we help our fellows develop the knowledge, experience and skills necessary to practice clinical endocrinology and diabetes. Our program also provides the exposure and training in basic and/or clinical research that will allow the pursuit of a career in academic medicine for those interested.

The first year of the fellowship is primarily designed to provide the fellows with a very broad and strong clinical training. In addition, during this first year, there is time reserved for preparatory research activities; therefore, fellows are asked to select a preceptor and to start working on developing a research project as early as possible. During the second year of training the fellows have less clinical responsibilities and are expected to carry-out their research project, either basic or clinical, under the guidance of their preceptor.
