End of Year Reception 2024 38 1

The first cohort of CU2RE students graduated in 2024. Among this cohort of six students, four opted to continue their practice in primary care with three matching into Family Medicine and one matching into Medicine-Pediatrics. Two other CU2RE graduates matched into Obstetrics/Gynecology and Otolaryngology.

 

CU2RE On Campus and Beyond

  • Through their participation in events like health fairs and nutrition counseling, CU2RE students learn about primary care's role in creating healthier communities.

  • CU2RE students discuss Birmingham's history at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Sites throughout Alabama hold important lessons about the cultural and the socioeconomic barriers to health care patients might face.

  • For CU2RE student Anna Ulrey, presenting her poster, “Safe Words in Lifestyle Medicine,” at conferences and UAB Primary Care Week has highlighted how meaningful primary care research can be in shaping clinical practice.

  • CU²RE students who attended the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium have the opportunitiy to join several lectures and participate in hands-on activities, like suturing, point-of-care ultrasound, and dermatology workshops. 

  • CU2RE students enjoy enhanced training on a variety of clinical topics.

  • Students in the CU2RE program enjoy robust summer learning opportunities from a variety of faculty covering topics such as developing as leaders in medicine, motivational interviewing, and scholarly activity and research. 

  • Students have opportunities to connect with fellow medical students as well as Department of Family and Community Medicine faculty. 

  • CU2RE students also learn about the business of medicine during sessions with local physicians from Christ Health Center. Insightful topics covered included: Business of Maintaining a Practice, Care of the Patient in a FQHC, and Physician Wellness and Wellbeing.

  • Members of our CU2RE program volunteered at Blazer Kitchen, an on-campus food pantry designed to address food insecurity amongst UAB employees, students, and referred patients. 

  • CU2RE students have the opportunity to present research at conferences such as the STFM Conference on Medical Student Education.
