Dr. William R. Stetler, Jr.Assistant Professor

Areas of Interest
endovascular neurosurgery, neurovascular disorders, general neurosurgery, spinal disorders, spine surgery

Physician Profile

Dr. Stetler is a native of Alabama and grew up in the Birmingham area. He attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he received a B.A. cum laude in Biochemistry. He subsequently returned home to Birmingham, where he attended UAB School of Medicine graduating at the top of his class with AOA honors.

Following medical school, Dr. Stetler completed his neurosurgery internship and residency at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. Karin Muraszko. During his residency, Dr. Stetler had the opportunity to train under experts in both neurovascular disorders and complex spinal disorders. He was able to complete a one-year enfolded endovascular fellowship mentored by Drs. Greg Thompson and Aditya Pandey (neurosurgery), as well as Drs. Joseph Gemmete and Neeraj Chaudhary (radiology). He also did extensive training under Drs. Frank LaMarca and Paul Park in complex spinal neurosurgery, and as a result practices spinal and general neurosurgery in addition to doing endovascular surgery. This multi-disciplinary training is rare for endovascular-trained neurosurgeons and provides Dr. Stetler with a unique perspective in his field (offering both endovascular spinal surgery/embolization and stabilization when necessary).

Dr. Stetler graduated from his residency in 2015, receiving the John McGillicuddy Leadership Award, the Neurosurgery Academic Excellence Award, and the William Chandler Clinical Research Award. To further broaden his training, Dr. Stetler then chose to continue to diversify his training with another endovascular fellowship at the University of Florida under the direction of Dr. Brian Hoh, a pioneer and leader in combined open and endovascular neurosurgery. During this busy fellowship, Dr. Stetler was able to perform more than 700 endovascular procedures, as well as numerous microsurgical procedures to refine his technical skills and hone his clinical acumen.

After completing his fellowship at the University of Florida, Dr. Stetler was able to return home to join the faculty as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at his alma mater here at UAB. He currently is building his practice in general neurosurgery with a focus on cerebrovascular and spinal disorders.
