Roger SmalliganRoger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean of the Heersink School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Campus, has been named the next governor for the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and awarded ACP Mastership (MACP), one of the ACP’s highest honors.

As governor, he will represent the ACP Alabama Chapter, serving as a link between local members and national leaders and shaping initiatives that advance internal medicine. Smalligan will step into the governor-elect role in April 2026 and begin his four-year term as governor in April 2027.

"Dr. Smalligan’s selection as governor-elect and recognition as an ACP Master are testaments to his exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing medical education and practice,” said Anupam Agarwal, M.D., senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the Heersink School of Medicine. “We are proud to see him represent Alabama on a regional and national stage and look forward to the contributions he will make in these roles."

Smalligan brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served in the Tennessee and Texas chapters. Since joining the Alabama chapter, he has been a member of the chapter’s Governor’s Advisory Council.

MACP is a national recognition honoring physicians for excellence in practice, leadership, and service to the profession. This distinction underscores Smalligan’s longstanding commitment to advancing internal medicine and mentoring future physicians. In 2024, he was honored with the ACP Alabama Chapter Laureate Award.
