Catherine Lumb, M.D., practices geriatric medicine with a focus on understanding her patients beyond their health diagnoses. She listens carefully and considers how health care intersects with independence and quality of life. These values are central to her career at UAB Huntsville and were developed during her training at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine.

On Match Day, Brenton Bicknell will join his classmates, eager to share in the excitement to discover where everyone will train in medical residency. Already matched into ophthalmology at UAB Callahan Eye, the day is as much about celebrating his peers’ achievements as it is his own. For the fourth-year medical student at the Heersink School of Medicine’s Huntsville Campus, it marks a milestone shaped by mentors, family, and the camaraderie of classmates who have shared the journey.

Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean of the Heersink School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Campus, has been named the next governor for the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and awarded ACP Mastership.

Twenty exceptional faculty members were honored with the 2024 Dean’s Excellence Awards for their outstanding contributions across service, teaching, research, diversity enhancement, and mentorship within the School of Medicine.

Desalyn Johnson, fourth year Heersink student, has received the Jefferson Underwood Minority Scholarship Award. The Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA) presented Johnson with her award at their Oct. 19 meeting in Montgomery.

Nine Heersink staff members were honored at the 2023 Dean’s Excellence Awards for Staff reception. Recipients, guests, and Heersink leaders gathered in the Wallace Tumor Institute Lobby on Sept. 14 to celebrate the inaugural group of honorees.
