2023 UAB Global Health Symposium

Written by

uab global health symposium graphicThe inaugural UAB Global Health Symposium was held September 28-29, bringing together a diverse group of health care workers from around the world to discuss equity in global health.

UAB has engaged in global health over the past four decades, with partners in more than 50 countries across various academic disciplines. The event was held with the belief that there is a need to reduce global health disparities through new, fairer approaches that bridge gaps in health and resources between countries. The success of this aim depends on changing outdated methods, promoting equality, respect, and mutual benefits in partnerships to address shared goals.

The two-day hybrid symposium served as a platform for discussing the most effective strategies in global health partnerships, encouraging research, training, service, and capacity-building collaborations. The event also provided a setting for participants to engage in discussions to enhance and fortify existing partnerships, and connect to establish new partnerships.

The event was hosted by the Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health (UAB Heersink School of Medicine), Sparkman Center for Global Health (UAB School of Public Health), PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for International Nursing (UAB School of Nursing), Center for Social Justice, Institute for Human Rights (UAB College of Arts and Sciences), UAB Graduate School & Global Affairs, UAB School of Health Professions, Africa Health Research Institute, and Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia. A number of additional UAB units came together as sponsors of the event to support the event's mission.

The agenda was full, with a wide variety of topics focusing on different aspects of equity in collaborative global health endeavors encompassing education, research, and practice. The livestream recordings of the sessions are available for viewing.
