Following decades of transformative leadership and outstanding contributions from Craig Hoesley, M.D., the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine will soon begin a national search for the next leader to advance the medical education mission as senior associate dean for medical education and chair of the Department of Medical Education.
The national search for Hoesley’s successor will launch in August 2026. To ensure leadership continuity, the goal is to appoint a new senior associate dean for medical education and chair of medical education by January 2027 to provide an appropriate transition period before Hoesley steps down from this leadership role in April 2027. He will retain his faculty position as a professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases.
“Dr. Hoesley has guided the education of thousands of learners and helped position our school at the forefront of academic medicine,” said Anupam Agarwal, M.D., senior vice president for medicine and dean of the Heersink School of Medicine. “I thank him for his immense impact, including leading our school through the successful Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process in 2022, resulting in the maximum possible eight-year accreditation term. He also has overseen the ongoing transformation of Volker Hall as the hub of medical education, including the openings of the Heersink Active Learning Center and the Volker Hall Atrium.”
A nationally respected educator, clinician, and researcher, Hoesley joined the UAB faculty in 1998, served as associate dean for undergraduate medical education from 2008 to 2015, and as senior associate dean for medical education and chair of the Department of Medical Education since 2015.
