The UAB Department of Neurology is proud to recognize Aparna Vaddiparti, M.D., assistant professor, for completing the Center for Teaching and Learning’s (CTL) Essentials of Teaching program.
Vaddiparti is the first faculty member from the department to participate in the program, which is designed to help early-career faculty develop effective, inclusive, and engaging teaching practices while fostering connections across disciplines.
“Through this certificate program, I particularly valued learning about learning theory, active learning techniques, and developing competency-based assessment methods,” Vaddiparti said. “I also enjoyed meeting faculty across disciplines at UAB and, through CTL, was able to complete an additional certificate on the principles of course design.”
The program consists of four half-day sessions focused on key aspects of teaching and learning. Topics include how students learn, collaborative and active learning strategies, inclusive teaching approaches, and the use of tools such as artificial intelligence to support learning outcomes. Participants also explore alternative assessment methods and ways to create intercultural and international learning opportunities across the curriculum.
Sessions incorporate resources and expertise from across UAB, including Disability Support Services, Student Counseling Services, the Office of Learning Technologies, and the Writing Center.
Completion of the program reflects a commitment to teaching excellence and ongoing professional development. The certification may also be used to strengthen promotion and tenure materials.
