The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences hosted its 27th Annual Research Symposium on Friday, June 12, at the UAB Altec/Styslinger Genomic and Data Sciences Building, bringing together leading voices in vision science for a full day of education, discussion, and innovation.
This year’s program featured lectures from nationally recognized experts including Evan D. Schoenberg, M.D., Director of Refractive Surgery, Georgia Eye Partners; Amol Sura, M.D., Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Duke University; and Nieraj Jain, M.D., Associate Professor, Emory University School of Medicine. The symposium included round table discussions on cornea and refractive surgery, uveitis, and retina with community partners from Retina Consultants of Alabama.
Schoenberg presented this year’s UAB Ophthalmology Alumni Association Sponsored Lecture, discussing surgical treatment for corneal conditions, such as keratoconus and ectasia, drawing from his clinical expertise to offer meaningful insights and treatment pathways. He also joined the cornea and refractive surgery round table, accompanied by Tyler Hall, M.D., and Tim Johnson, M.D., from UAB Ophthalmology.
Sura gave the Charles J. Burnham, M.D., Endowed Distinguished Lectureship and shared insights on uveitis and inflammatory eye disease. He accompanied Russell Read, M.D., Ph.D., from Retina Consultants of Alabama, at the uveitis round table discussion.
Serving as the Helen Keller Lecturer, Jain discussed macular and vitreous diseases through anecdotes and lessons learned during his research career. At the retina round table, he joined Jason Crosson, M.D., and Ben Roberts, M.D., from Retina Consultants of Alabama.
Additional presentations included posters and lectures prepared by second- and fourth-year residents sponsored by faculty and fellow mentors. Awards were voted on by Symposium attendees and presented one to a resident from each class:
Second-Year Winner: Alexandra King, M.D., for her poster “What Lies Beneath”; sponsored by Jason Crosson, M.D., and Tyler Rowsey, M.D.
Fourth-Year Winner: Mary “Mollie” Moses, M.D., for her presentation “Strabismus Detection in Telemedicine”; sponsored by Ann Marie Arciniegas-Bernal, M.D.
A special thank you to our Residency Program Coordinator, Jordan Driscoll, for her efforts in organizing and executing this important event.
