Tim Johnson, M.D.
, assistant professor, has been appointed residency program director in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, effective July 1, 2026.
Johnson succeeds Rob Tauscher, M.D., assistant professor, who served as interim director and will continue supporting the program as assistant residency program director. The department is grateful for Tauscher’s leadership in the residency program and looks forward to further collaboration.
Johnson earned his medical degree from Emory University in 2010 and completed his ophthalmology residency at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 2014. Following his residency, Johnson dedicated nearly 10 years to clinical practice as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, gaining invaluable experience in patient care.
He is a recent graduate of UAB Ophthalmology’s Glaucoma Fellowship Program, where he worked closely with Brian Samuels, M.D., Ph.D., The EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair. During his fellowship, Johnson worked closely with patients and served as a dedicated mentor to residents.
“As a glaucoma fellow, it was obvious that everyone wanted me to succeed,” said Johnson. “That culture of consistent and meaningful support gave me a mission—to share my experience with others and foster their growth. I am eager to continue supporting our residents to help them become world-class clinicians.”
Through this new appointment, Johnson is committed to elevating UAB Ophthalmology residents and the education program while providing compassionate, patient-centered care at UAB Hospital-Callahan Eye.
