On Sunday, Feb. 3, James (Jim) Herron Halsey Jr., M.D., founding chair for the Department of Neurology, peacefully passed in Birmingham at age 85.
We asked the 1st Year Executive Committee their thoughts on 1.) becoming a physician, 2.) Birmingham, and 3.) the UAB School of Medicine. Here’s what they had to say:
I grew up in Hong Kong, then moved to Dothan, AL to complete high school. As a traditional student, I completed my bachelor’s degree in neuroscience at UAB, with career goals to teach, to help patients in achieving their best quality-of-life, and to be an advocate in public health issues such as mental health and environmental health.
For more than 20 years, UAB has recognized the extraordinary contributions of outstanding women faculty, staff, students, administrators and those women in the community to whom we owe respect and gratitude. The Commission on the Status of Women is honored to accept nominations for the 2019 Outstanding Women Awards. Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.
The School of Medicine is seeking proposals from faculty to increase the capacity (e.g. integrated programs, databases, repositories, scope and output of existing research cores) and access to emerging technologies to accelerate research innovation and scientific discovery at UAB over the next decade.
UAB's Office of Global Health and International Emergency Medicine organizes annual trips to send faculty, fellows and residents to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. This past year, the department sent two separate groups with Chris Greene, M.D., Matt Heimann, M.D., Cameron Crosby, M.D., and Jake Morris, M.D., to serve for about one month.
Informatics researchers, professionals and educators from the UAB Informatics Institute had a strong presence at the AMIA 2018 Annual Symposium, held Nov. 3-7 in San Francisco. The symposium is the premier academic conference in biomedical informatics and is sponsored by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Over 2,200 people attended this year’s conference.
Richard Whitley, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics, was recently named an Honorary Fellow by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in recognition of his significant contributions to medicine.
