Dr. Tania Arora.

Tania Arora, M.D., a professor in the UAB Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice Chair of Access and Engagement in the UAB Department of Surgery, has been appointed as co-chair for two prestigious surgical society committees.

Society of University Surgeons (SUS) Leadership

Arora will co-chair the JEDI Committee of the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), which focuses on access and engagement initiatives for the society.

After a co-chair term, she will ascend to lead the JEDI Committee as the primary chair for a three-year term.

SUS was founded in 1938 and focuses on promoting excellence and leadership in academic surgery.

Southern Surgical Association Leadership

Arora was also recently appointed a co-chair for the Southern Surgical Association (SSA) Leadership Development Program, which identifies and supports surgeons with potential for academic promotion, leadership roles, and future membership.

“Creating structured opportunities for mentorship and leadership development is essential to the future of academic surgery,” Arora said. “I’m grateful to the Society of University Surgeons and the Southern Surgical Association, as well as to UAB, for their commitment to this work. I look forward to contributing to programs that not only identify talent, but actively support its growth and long-term success.”

A faculty member at UAB since 2024, Arora provides care for complex cancer cases, with a particular focus on melanoma, sarcoma, cutaneous malignancies, and benign and malignant breast disease. Her research interests include curriculum design and implementation, as well as quality improvement, with an emphasis on improving clinical outcomes for cancer patients and promoting equality in healthcare and medical education.

Arora currently holds leadership and committee positions with the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Association of Surgical Education, and the Association of Program Directors in Surgery.

“Dr. Arora has a proven history of passionate dedication to some of the most well-respected surgical societies across the country,” said Sushanth Reddy, M.D., interim director of the Division of Surgical Oncology. “We’re proud to see her appointed to these positions of leadership and are looking forward to seeing how she continues to create positive, lasting change in the field of surgery for years to come.”
