Bhuwan Giri, M.B.B.S., an assistant professor in the UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, has been awarded the Career Development Award from the Research Foundation of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) for his project entitled, “GDT Cell Dysregulation in Bile Acid-Mediated Progression of Colitis-Associated Cancer (CAC).”

The award will provide $150,000 over two years to support Giri’s research focused on understanding the immunomodulatory role of bile acids in a subset of specialized immune cells called Gamma Delta T-cell in the  progression of CAC. His work aims to advance the understanding of colorectal cancer progression and identify potential pathways for improved therapeutic strategies.

This competitive national award recognizes promising early-career investigators who are committed to advancing innovative and translational research of diseases of the colon, rectum, anus, or small bowel.

Giri’s achievement reflects both the strength of his scientific work and the collaborative multi-disciplinary mentorship environment within the UAB Department of Surgery. His work has been supported by mentorship from Casey Weaver, M.D., professor in the Department of Pathology. His co-mentors include Karin Hardiman, M.D. Ph.D., professor and associate vice chair of basic research, and Daniel Chu, M.D., MSPH, professor and director in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. His other collaborators and co-mentors include Craig Maynard, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pathology as well as Mark Sundrud Ph.D., professor at Dartmouth University.

“This award is a well-deserved recognition of Giri’s outstanding contributions to colorectal cancer research. He has demonstrated remarkable initiative and dedication throughout this project, and I look forward to seeing his continued success as he searches for expanded treatment options for his patients,” says Chu.

“I am deeply grateful for the support and mentorship which has been instrumental in shaping this work. I am excited for the opportunity to move this project forward and contribute to better understanding of this devastating disease .”
