Bhuwan Giri, M.B.B.S., assistant professor in the UAB Department of Surgery’s Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, has been selected by the Central Surgical Association (CSA) Foundation Board as a recipient of a 2026 CSA Foundation Award.
He will receive a $10,000 research grant for his research proposal titled “Elucidating role of bile acids in progression of colitis-associated colorectal cancer.”
The grant was awarded to a select number of applicants whose proposals demonstrated exceptional promise. The one-year grant supports direct-cost expenditures for the proposed research project, with funding commencing July 1, 2026. He will be recognized at the CSA New Member Introduction and Awards Ceremony on June 5, 2026 in Chicago. Giri will present findings at the CSA 85th Annual Meeting in early 2028.
Giri’s research focuses on the immune and molecular mechanisms driving colitis-associated colorectal cancer, a malignancy arising in a significant number of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Prior to joining the UAB faculty in January 2025, Giri completed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota and University of Miami, a general surgery residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a colorectal surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India.
