J. Bart Rose, M.D., MAS, the director of the UAB Pancreatobiliary Disease Center and an associate professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology, discussed key aspects of pancreatic cancer, including risk factors, common symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and available treatment options, as a part of an educational video series produced by O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Rose explained how pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed, outlines the role of imaging and biopsy, and reviews current treatment approaches such as surgery, chemotherapy and multidisciplinary care planning. He also discussed why early evaluation is important and how patients may be referred to specialized care teams.
Rose also described current treatment approaches, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of these treatments, depending on disease stage and patient factors. He emphasized the importance of individualized treatment planning and coordinated care among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialists.
“Treatment planning for pancreatic cancer is highly individualized,” Rose said. “A multidisciplinary team approach allows us to consider all available options and tailor care to each patient’s situation.”
The video highlights how patients are guided through the diagnostic and treatment process at UAB, from initial evaluation to long-term follow-up. Rose also addressed common patient questions regarding surgical candidacy, timing of treatment, and the role of specialized cancer centers in managing complex pancreatic disease.
