The goal of the program is to produce a proficient surgical and medical expert in the field of pediatric and adolescent gynecology who can achieve a Focused Practice Designation.

To develop your understanding of this patient population, you will complete rotations in endocrinology, pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, dermatology, adolescent medicine, eating disorders, transgender care, and a multidisciplinary child abuse clinic. These rotations will help develop your fund of knowledge in counseling on contraceptive options for the medically complex child, the evaluation and management of sexually transmitted infections, menstrual cycle irregularities, vaginal and vulvar dermatoses, and benign disorders of the genital tract and ovaries.

 

Objectives

  • To develop comprehensive medical knowledge in the field of pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
  • To develop competency of surgical skills needed for patients with complex genital anomalies.
  • To develop and conduct research in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Structure of the Fellowship

We’re dedicated to nurturing and guiding the future generation of physicians, recognizing that our trainees are the cornerstone of the future of women’s healthcare. A two-year fellowship program is structured to provide each fellow with broad-based experience in all the clinical and research aspects of pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Time allocation is 70% for clinical duties.

  • Staff Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology clinics.
  • Complete rotations in the following:
    • Endocrinology
    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Pediatric Urology
    • Dermatology
    • Adolescent Medicine
    • Disordered Eating
    • And Multidisciplinary Clinics specializing in:
      • Transgender Medicine
      • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
      • Turner’s Syndrome
      • Bleeding Disorders
      • Child Abuse

These rotations will help develop your fund of knowledge in counseling and management of contraceptive options for the medically complex child, oncofertility, menstrual cycle irregularities, vaginal and vulvar dermatoses, and benign disorders of the genital tract and ovaries.

Rotations are located at the Women and Infants Center of UAB and Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

Expected Call: Currently 1 night per month, in-house. Any additional call is reimbursed monetarily in addition to the fellowship stipend.

Salary and Benefits

Our program provides benefits and insurance plans available to all UAB trainees. Salary and benefits for our Residents and Fellows are based on PGY Level.

Medical Education

Fellows have protected educational time in the form of monthly NASPAG Fellowship Lectures, PAG Journal Club, and a department-wide lecture series. All fellows are expected to participate in these didactics and lecture offerings.

Research Opportunities

Time allocation is 30% for research endeavors.

All fellows are expected to participate in the postgraduate research design courses offered at UAB and to complete a novel research project upon graduation. Please visit the Center for Research in Women's Health for more information on research opportunities and ongoing studies.
