Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Employee of the Month: MAY 2014

Veronica R. Smoke has been chosen as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s first Employee of the Month for May 2014! A 27-year employee of UAB, Smoke is a Nurse Clinician in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic on the 10^th floor of the Women & Infants Center. It is a job that is dear to her because of her patients. “I like working with the high-risk OB patients because they need hope that they can have a healthy pregnancy outcome,” she says. Smoke likes the miracle aspect of it. Her goal is to help women appreciate each milestone, both big and small.

Luisa Hernandez, a Spanish Interpreter for the Obstetrics Complications Clinic (OBCC), thought that retirement after working in corporate America would be fulfilling, but soon found that she “was not ready.” And, had she remained retired, now realizes that she would have missed a wonderful opportunity to help the Hispanic population that would become more rewarding to her than to them. Hernandez has been honored as the OB/GYN June Employee of the Month.

With a beautiful smile and a pleasant personality, Deborah Dixon graces the halls of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic. The sentiment is that she is a staple in the team - “Like the glue that holds this unit together,” said co-worker Rebecca Ellison. It is therefore no surprise that she was nominated and chosen as the OB/GYN July Employee of the Month.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Employee of the Month: AUGUST 2014

Tongia F. Feagins, Program Manager II, was chosen as OB/GYN’s August Employee of the month. A special plaque and pin were given to her by Kathy Minor, Executive Administrator, during a staff meeting on September 11, 2014.
Feagins is a 26-year employee of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of OB/GYN. However, she’s been associated with both for 30 years.

At the celebration for the most recent Employee of the Month (EOM), OB/GYN Chairman Dr. William Andrews commented that he sees the honoree just about everywhere he goes on campus. This is not surprising because as the department’s courier, the job demands traveling the breadth of the hospital and to its administrative offices. The Department of OB/GYN’s September 2014 EOM honor was given to Office Services Specialist II, Corderial Johzavier Carson.

As a credentialed minister in the Church of God, Christy Willis’ life’s desire is to help people. She believes it is her mission both at church and at work. That is why she considers her work as the Student Clerkship Coordinator in the OB/GYN Division of Education the perfect job. Willis was chosen as OB/GYN’s October 2014 Employee of the Month.

When Deidre Hayes drove pass the beautiful Kirklin Clinic (TKC) back in 1996, she dreamed of working in that amazing-looking building with the waterfall out front. Although she was already employed as a Unit Secretary at the UAB Mary Lewis Convalescent Center, she immediately wanted to transfer - and that’s exactly what she did. Now, after an impressive eighteen years of service, Hayes was chosen as OB/GYN’s November 2014 Employee of the Month.
