We’re dedicated to nurturing and guiding the future generation of physicians, recognizing that our trainees are the cornerstone of the future of women’s healthcare.

This fellowship is a three-year ACGME-accredited program comprising 12 months of protected research time and 24 months of clinical training. All fellows complete their thesis project during their first year. We offer a broad range of research opportunities and robust clinical and surgical training.

 

Objectives

  • To prepare fellows for successful careers in academic gynecologic oncology through comprehensive clinical, surgical, and research training.
  • To develop expertise in the evaluation and management of malignant and complex gynecologic conditions.
  • To cultivate advanced surgical proficiency in both open and minimally invasive procedures.
  • To provide structured research training in basic, translational, and/or clinical research.
  • To nurture active participation in education, collaboration, and scholarly activities.

Structure of the Fellowship

  • 12 months protected research time (11 months in first year, 1 month at the end of fellowship).
  • 24 months of clinical rotations (4-week blocks)
    • Fellows predominantly rotate between 4 major rotations
      • 2 inpatient services (Green and Gold teams)
      • OR rotation
      • Clinic rotation
    • Additional learning opportunities include off service rotations (radiation oncology, surgical intensive care unit, colorectal surgery)
    • Opportunity for 4-week elective rotation

 


Application Process

Applications should be submitted via ERAS by the date specified by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) Program Directors Network (April 6, 2026)

  • Prerequisites:
    • ABOG eligibility, a state medical license, and completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Minimum application requirements are as follows
    • CV
    • Program director letter
    • Three letters of recommendation (including one SLOE)
    • Photograph
  • Number of first year positions:  2

There will be in person with a social event the evening prior

Salary and Benefits

Our program provides benefits and insurance plans available to all UAB trainees. Salary and benefits for our Residents and Fellows are based on PGY Level.

Medical Education

 

Mentorship

Each fellow is assigned a thesis mentor as well as a clinical mentor at the beginning of fellowship.

 

Didactics

  • Tuesday Conference: Tuesdays at 6:45 AM. Educational conference for fellows, residents, and medical students on service.
  • Fellows Conference: Friday at 11:00. One hour didactic with rotating curriculum that covers broad range of gynecologic oncology topics
  • Tumor Board: Mondays at 4:30. Multidisciplinary meeting including radiology, pathology, radiation oncology, and interventional radiology to review complex cases and make treatment recommendations.
  • Journal Club: Monthly review of seminal papers in gynecologic oncology by disease site
  • Complications Conference: Quarterly review of medical and surgical complications with quality improvement focus

 

Research Opportunities
