Technology
- Video Magnifiers: Use powerful cameras to enlarge text and images on a screen, making reading easier and more comfortable.
- Wearable Smart Devices: Wearable devices that magnify your view, allowing hands-free use for reading, watching, TV, or daily tasks and smart glasses that provide real-time guidance and object recognition.
- Smartphone Apps: A wide range of apps available for magnification and reading text aloud, even identifying objects and colors.
- Traditional Magnifiers: Classic handheld or stand magnifiers provide a simple, portable solution for reading small text or inspecting objects up close.
Bioptic Telescopes
- Bioptics are special telescopes that are attached to glasses. They help people see better for different activities, like reading what’s on the board at school, watching TV, or driving a car.
- The providers at the UAB Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation have extensive experience prescribing and providing training in the use of bioptic telescopes. States permitting bioptic driving - including Alabama - have very specific vision requirements to obtain a bioptic driver’s license.
- Our low vision optometrists advise patients about their eligibility for bioptic driving and initial training is provided by our occupational therapists.
Coping with Vision Loss
Losing your vision can be very hard, especially if it happens suddenly. Many people who have vision problems may feel sad, frustrated, or anxious. Family members may also worry about their loved one’s vision loss and could benefit from support and information.
- Comprehensive Support for Individuals and Family: UAB Connections provides services to people in Alabama with vision impairments and their families. A licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in helping those with vision loss offers evaluations and treatment for both patients and their families. This treatment focuses on teaching problem-solving and behavioral skills. This helps patients learn how to deal with challenges more effectively. We also have discussions about coping strategies, assistive technology, and managing daily life.
- Educational Workshops and Community Engagement: UAB Connections conducts eye-health education workshops for community organizations and businesses to raise awareness about vision health. Our expert-led sessions focus on adapting services for individuals with vision impairments and promote healthy lifestyles through social and recreational activities.
- Monthly Support Group Meetings: UAB Connections support group meets the first Tuesday of every month, providing a platform for patients and their families to share experiences and gain insights. The meetings include presentations from UAB faculty, followed by therapeutic breakout sessions, creating a space for learning, discussion, and community integration.
- UAB Connections is directed by Laura Dreer, Ph.D. For more information, contact the group facilitator, Molly Whitney, at (205) 488-0778 or by email at mollycox@uabmc.edu.
