Combining the world-renowned expertise of the UAB School of Medicine and School of Health Professions to provide comprehensive rehabilitation for people with vision impairment.

Who We Are

  • Our outpatient rehabilitation program helps children and adults with vision impairment due to eye diseases, conditions, or brain injuries.
  • Using optometry and occupational therapy, we focus on enhancing your ability to perform daily tasks by making the most of your remaining vision.

What is Low Vision?

  • Low vision is a type of vision loss that cannot be fixed with glasses, medication, or surgery.
  • People with low vision may have trouble with everyday tasks like reading, recognizing faces, driving, or moving around even with the best glasses.
  • Conditions which may cause low vision include macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, albinism, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.
  • Low vision services help people maximize their remaining sight and stay independent.
  • At the Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation, services include vision training, using tools like magnifiers or special lights, making changes to the home for safety, and teaching ways to adapt to daily tasks.

Referrals

  • We care for people of all ages, from infants to older adults.
  • Self-referrals are welcome; but we may request a referral from your physician or eye doctor. Contact our office directly at (205) 488-0736 to schedule a consultation.
  • If you are a healthcare provider, referrals may be faxed to (205) 488-0746.
