Bertram Young Named Director of Development
We would like to welcome Bertram Young, who has been named our new Director of Development. Bertram comes to UAB from the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama with more than 10 years’ experience in fundraising, public relations, and marketing. BlazerVision improves how UAB student-athletes play the game
Student-athletes at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will see their sport in a new perspective through BlazerVision, a new partnership between UAB Athletics, School of Optometry and Department of Ophthalmology. As part of UAB Athletics’ pre-participation examinations, each student-athlete will receive comprehensive eye care, acute game-time care and state-of-the-art concussion baseline testing. -
Blythe Monheit, MD, Clears Up Glaucoma Facts
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness by damaging a nerve in the back of your eye called the optic nerve. The symptoms can start so slowly that you may not notice them at first. The only way to find out if you have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam.Thankfully, UAB Callahan Eye has an expert team of ophthalmologists who specialize in the detection, prevention, and treatment of glaucoma. We sat down with Blythe Monheit, MD, a glaucoma specialist with more than 15 years of experience, to get the details on glaucoma.

Broadening Horizons: UAB Ophthalmology Residents Gain Global Perspective in Nicaragua
Residents see patients at CHOSEN as well as clinics around Nicaragua.The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is taking its residency program to new heights by incorporating international rotations into the curriculum. In an effort to provide residents with a broader perspective on ophthalmology, our 2022-23 third-year residents recently completed a one-week international rotation in Nicaragua, focusing on cataract surgery and the practice of ophthalmology in a foreign setting. -
Cable guys: Inside UAB's high-tech, custom-built approach to eye science
The miracle of sight relies on a masterpiece of wiring. More than a million individual nerve cells scattered around the eye convert visual information into electricity. Then these individual cells are bundled together at the back of the eye into the optic nerve, which carries the signal to the brain. -
Callahan Night at the Ballpark
On June 29, 2018, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital hosted the inaugural Callahan Night at the Ballpark. This was an event for faculty, staff, and their families to come together for food, fun, and a ballgame. The event was held at Regions Field and the Birmingham Baron’s hosted the Jackson Generals. -

Camaraderie Amongst Peers: Birmingham’s Women of Ophthalmology (WOOs)
In 2013, several local female ophthalmologists, including UAB faculty members, decided to get together for dinner. They didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of a local group known as the WOOs (Women of Ophthalmology).
