The UAB Department of Pediatrics is now accepting applications for our communications internship! 
This is a paid, part-time internship that can also be counted for college course credit. Students pursuing course credit for this internship are responsible for getting approval from their institution and advisors. 

Internship period: Over the fall semester (start and end date are flexible)
Hours: 20 hours per week
Compensation: $15 per hour
Course credit: Available

Responsibilities

The goal of the UAB Department of Pediatrics Communications Internship is to provide our intern experience in a variety of communication areas. The intern will learn about basic communication responsibilities while also having the opportunity to learn more about their specific communication interests if possible. The responsibilities of the intern may include any of the following: 

Writing
Assist with editing, researching and creating content for the UAB Department of Pediatrics website, newsletters and social media. All writing must be done in AP style and follow UAB's brand writing style

Digital communications
Work to create, edit and publish the Department of Pediatrics' weekly e-newsletter, FYI Fridays. Organize and edit content submitted for FYI Fridays and create the weekly e-newsletter in Salesforce Marketing Cloud and prepare it for distribution. 

Social Media
Create social media posts for the department's social media pages on Twitter and Instagram. Help to maintain and update an editorial calendar for the department's social media. 

Web
Update, add and edit content on the UAB Department of Pediatrics website. Joomla is the primary content management system used by UAB. Training in Joomla will be provided at the beginning of the internship.

Photography/Video
Shoot and edit photos and videos for use on social media, website and digital communications. A department camera is provided for all photography/video needs.

Graphic design
Develop and design items for social media, events, programs, website and e-newsletter. Access to the Adobe Creative Suite will be available for design needs. 

Additional duties
Assist with other communication-related responsibilities as needed. Opportunity to explore other communication opportunities if available. 

Position Requirements

  • Applicants must be either a:

    • Rising college junior or senior studying mass communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, web design, or another related field, or

    • Graduate student studying mass communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, web design, health administration or another related field, or

    • Recent graduate with a degree in mass communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, graphic design, web design, or another related program. Candidates who graduated prior to Fall 2021 will not be considered. 

  • Applicants must be organized and be able to meet deadlines.

  • Applicants must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Applicants must have strong writing skills in a variety of formats including articles, features and social media posts.

  • Applicants must have a decent knowledge of AP style and be able to copy-edit.

  • Applicants must have an understanding of social media platforms (particularly Twitter and Instagram). 

  • Applicants must have professional interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with faculty, staff and trainees. 

  • Experience in Joomla, Wordpress or other content management systems is preferred but not required. 

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud or other design programs is preferred but not required.
