Pediatric Primary Care Clinic celebrates annual Reach Out and Read Day
The UAB Pediatric Primary Care Clinic (PCC) celebrated its annual Reach Out and Read Day on Tuesday, July 13 by passing out copies of “Leo Gets a Checkup” to patients and their families. The clinic staff, faculty and residents added to the celebration by dressing up in a toddler theme.
Dr. Nichols joins subcommittee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Alana Nichols, M.D., first year resident in the Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program, has been named to the subcommittee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) of the National Med-Peds Residents’ Association (NMPRA).

Fourteen UAB Pediatrics trainees selected to be 2021-2022 UAB School of Medicine Learning Community Housestaff Mentors
Medical students at the UAB School of Medicine participate in the learning communities (LC) course across all four years of medical school. Housestaff members from across UAB are selected each year to serve as mentors for students in these LCs.

After a national search, Kathy Monroe, M.D., has been named the next division director of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. She began her new role June 1, 2021.
Dr. Duerring elected to Alabama Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians Board of Directors
Shea Duerring, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, has been elected to the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Board of Directors.
Dr. Dimmitt elected president-elect to the Bell Center Board of Directors for 2021-2022
Reed Dimmitt, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, has been elected the president-elect for the Board of Directors of the Bell Center. Dr. Dimmitt has served on the Bell Center Board of Directors for four years and has been a longtime supporter of the center.
Dr. Whitley receives Rotary Vocational Service Award for 2020-2021
Richard Whitley, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been named the recipient of the 2020-2021 Rotary Vocational Service Award by the Rotary Club of Birmingham. This award is given each year to a non-Rotarian person in recognition of excellence in a vocational service that is recognized beyond the territory of the club.
