  • Are awards made on a rolling basis?

The deadline for completing the online application is February 28, 2024. However, complete applications will begin the review process on February 1st. • Are there guidelines for letter of recommendation?

The SIBS, PARAdiGM, Blazer BRAIN, SURE-GM, and KURE Programs are designed to give talented undergraduates the opportunity to conduct biomedical research in laboratories at an Academic Medical Center. The type of students who flourish in these summer internships are those who have a passion for science and want to utilize this opportunity to determine if graduate or medical school (or both through a MD-PhD Program) is the best fit for their future career. Students need to have taken some basic courses in biology in order to benefit from this experience. In addition, we are looking for students who are self-driven and will take advantage of the UAB environment to experience all the opportunities that an Academic Medical Center offers.

    Letters of recommendation should:

    • Emphasize the referee’s involvement with and knowledge of the student (how long have you known the student and in what context). If the student has done research with you, please comment on the student’s laboratory experience and capacity for a future career involving research.

    • Comment on how the student will contribute to our program.

    • Discuss one or two qualities or experiences that make this student especially appropriate for the internship.

    • Explain how this summer experience would make a difference in the student’s intellectual and personal growth.

  • Why did my reference not receive an email from the SIBS office requesting a letter of recommendation?

Once you submit your online application, the system sends a request email for letters of recommendation to your listed reference automatically.

What to check if your reference tells you that they didn't receive an email:

    • Double check that their email was entered correctly in your application. (Sometimes entering the email by the "Copy and Paste" method does not work and you will need to manually type out the email address.)

    • Next ask your reference to check their "Spam" or "Junk" email box. Since the request is set automatically emails do sometimes flag it a spam email.

Please remember that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all application materials and letters of recommendation are submitted before the deadline.

Please note that the application and letters of recommendation deadline are listed below:

    • Application Deadline: February 28th, Wednesday
    • Letters of Recommendation Deadline: March 6th, Wednesday

If you have any quesetions, please contact us at SIBS@uab.edu.
