The UAB Department of Surgery gathers for a photo at the 2018 Academic Surgical Congress in Jacksonville, Floriday, Jan. 30 – Feb. 1.
The UAB Department of Surgery headed to Jacksonville, Florida, last month for the Academic Surgical Congress, Jan. 30 – Feb. 1, 2018. With 71 presentations, UAB boasted the highest number of abstracts submitted from one institution at this year's event, surging ahead of the competition by a margin of 20. A total of 67 from UAB Surgery presented at the three-day meeting.
Additional highlights from the meeting:
- Roughly 20 UAB medical students presented at ASC for the first time.
- UAB Surgery residents and other trainees also represented UAB well and shared our research with other institutions.
- Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Director Greg Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., was elected president-elect of the Society of University Surgeons.
- The Division of Plastic Surgery's Timothy King, M.D., Ph.D., was elected to the nominating committee for the Association for Academic Surgery.
- UAB Surgery residents John Killian, M.D., and Laura Stafman, M.D., got very close to winning the ASC Surgical Jeopardy after posting 3200 points in the first round.
- Roughly 60 attended the UAB Surgery dinner at Institution Ale Works in Jacksonville, Florida, on the first night of ASC, Jan. 30.
- Seven UAB Surgery faculty moderated ASC sessions.
- American College of Surgeons Surgery News featured presentations from two UAB medical students, Kathryn Hudak and Callie Perkins.
- UAB Department of Surgery Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., won third place at the ASC Poker Tournament.
