More than 70 physicians and researchers traveled to the Hilton Birmingham at UAB last week to attend the third annual UAB Department of Surgery CME Course, "Best Practices in General Surgery."

The two-day event, held Feb. 1-2, 2019, featured presentations from many UAB Surgery faculty and trainees, as well as three guest speakers, including Fabrizio Michelassi, M.D., the chair of surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine; Cindy Mak, MBBS (Hons), FRACS, the director of breast services at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in New South Wales, Australia; and Nimalan Pathma-Nathan, MBBS (Hons), B.S., FRACS, a colorectal surgeon at Westmead Private Hospital, also in New South Wales, Australia. These speakers, as well as those from UAB, discussed a number of topics related to general surgery, including areas such as gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, acute care and vascular surgery.
