Dr. Colin MartinDepartment of Surgery Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Colin Martin, M.D., was recently re-elected to the Society of University Surgeons (SUS) Membership Committee and will serve until the 2023 Academic Surgical Congress.

Martin was first elected in 2019. Additionally, Associate Professor Jayleen Grams, M.D., will serve on the committee until 2022 and Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D. (SUS past president), will serve on the committee until 2023.

The SUS membership committee is responsible for reviewing and presenting candidates for membership, based on their accumulative scores and deliberations. The committee plays a large role in shaping the direction of the organization through the individuals that they select for membership.

The Society of University Surgeons was established in 1938 when Dr. Samuel J. Stabins, Chief Surgical Resident at the University of Rochester proposed the idea of a new surgical society whose members (1) had completed a rigorous training program in the tradition of Dr. William Halsted at Johns Hopkins Medical School and (2) held a faculty position at a United States medical school. The society's mission is to support and advance leaders in academic surgery.
