Dr. Colin MartinDivision of Pediatric Surgery Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Colin Martin, M.D., FACS, has been named the president-elect of the medical staff at Children’s of Alabama.

Martin was elected during the the Virtual Fall Medical Staff Meeting last month. He will serve a two-year term as president elect and will then assume the role of president of the medical staff at Children's of Alabama for two years, beginning 2024.

Martin will work with current President of the Medical Staff, Allison Black, M.D., to ensure a seamless transition in leadership for medical staff.

“I look forward to supporting the needs of the medical staff across the entire hospital,” said Martin. “Ultimately, I hope to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, as well as wellness initiatives, ensuring that medical staff continue to be represented and have access to all of the resources they need.”

Martin joined the UAB Department of Surgery faculty in 2012. A native of Delaware, Martin received his undergraduate degree from Carson Newman College. He began his education in medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine from where he graduated in 2003.

Martin’s surgical residency in general surgery was completed at University of Cincinnati in 2010. He completed his postdoctoral research fellowship in 2008 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and his pediatric surgery fellowship in 2012 at Vanderbilt University.

With an active research lab and clinical practice, Martin edifies what it means to be a surgeon scientist in the field. In addition to his new role, he will continue to serve as surgical director for the UAB/Children's of Alabama Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, co-director for the Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds, and vice chair of diversity, equity and inclusion in the department.
