oct new facultyThe UAB Department of Surgery is proud to welcome three new faculty members who have joined the department this October: Sarah B. Bateni, M.D., MSW, MAS, Stuart D. Hurst, M.D., and Joseph S. Walker, M.D., FACS.

 

Bateni Sarah 300x300Sarah B. Bateni, M.D., MSW, MAS

Dr. Bateni joins the department as an assistant professor for the Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Bateni completed her fellowship of Complex General Surgical Oncology at the University of Toronto. She attended the University of California, Davis for medical school. She then completed her general surgery residency at the University of California and UC Davis Medical Center, while earning her Master’s in Advanced Studies (Clinical Research).

Dr. Hurst joins the department as an assistant professor for the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. Before coming to UAB, Dr. Hurst served as the Medical Director of the Acute Care Surgery Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital and was an assistant professor of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Emory University School of Medicine. He went to Emory both for medical school and his residency in general surgery. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the MRC Centre for Transplantation at King’s College in London. Dr. Hurst was an administrative fellow in Acute Care Surgery and then an administrative fellow in Surgical Critical Care at Emory University and Grady Memorial Hospital. His research interests include clinical outcomes in trauma, trauma systems, the management of the injured patient, surgical education, penetrating cardiac injury, and emergency general surgery.

walker white coat web 300 2Joseph S. Walker, M.D., FACS

Dr. Walker joins the department as a clinical assistant professor for the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is a staff general surgeon at Northwest Medical Center in Winfield, Alabama. Previously, he was a private practice general surgeon at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. He went to UAB for medical school and trained as a general surgery resident at Physician’s Medical Center Carraway and then Baptist Health Systems, both in Birmingham, Alabama.
