Advances in surgical education are driven by rigorous scholarship focused on how surgeons are trained, assessed, and supported throughout their professional development. Education research plays a critical role in ensuring that training programs are effective, equitable, and aligned with the evolving demands of modern surgical practice. Faculty in the UAB Department of Surgery are actively engaged in education research examining competency-based assessment, entrustable professional activities (EPAs), feedback and evaluation processes, and learning environments across the continuum of surgical training. Through this work, the department aims to generate evidence-based strategies that enhance trainee development, promote educational excellence, and ultimately improve patient care.
