Biography

Dr. McFarland is a native of Birmingham, AL. He attended Indiana University on a football scholarship for his undergraduate education. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology in 2007 and became the first football player at Indiana to be elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society since 1983. He then attended medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and stayed in Birmingham to complete his residency training in general surgery at UAB. As a resident at UAB, he was awarded the Intern of the Year Award, Outstanding Junior Resident Teaching Award, Humanitarian Award, and Outstanding Chief Resident of the Year Award. He was also honored to be awarded the William D. Jordan, Jr Award of Excellence and Integrity in Vascular Surgery. He served as an Administrative Chief Resident prior to completing his vascular surgery fellowship at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. While in fellowship, he was fortunate to serve as the Fellow Representative to the Executive Council of the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS), which further stimulated his interest in resident and fellow education.

He returned to UAB as a faculty member in 2018 where he serves as an Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency and Co-Director of the UAB Limb Preservation Center with Dr. Brent Haverstock.
